Chesapeake Beach was once claimed to be the “Las Vegas of the Shore†in the late 19th century. A grand resort was planned to be built on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay, but was side-tracked when the Washington and Chesapeake Beach Railway Company was granted to building a railroad system through the state of Maryland. The Railway Company’s plans were halted, and never completed, but a resort town based on the railroad was created. In the late 1800’s Chesapeake Beach was home to many hotels, a race track, a casino, a boardwalk, and a beautiful shoreline for relaxation. The last train to run through Chesapeake Beach was during the Great Depression in 1935. Now, in tribute to the rail history, the old train stop has been transformed into a beautiful museum.
