Every Thanksgiving, my family and I head to my brother’s house for dinner. We’ve known for years that Barbara, his mother-in-law, has the best Thanksgiving recipes hands down. My kids always drive, take the train, or fly home from college and return to Annapolis, our hometown, in order to eat this Thanksgiving meal.

The menu is always the same — savory corn soup, spinach salad, warm cornbread, roasted vegetables, seasoned turkey crisped to perfection, homemade cranberry relish, and sour cream apple pie.

However, my favorite recipe is Barbara’s sweet potato/white potato casserole. The recipe is simple but is absolutely delicious. As the scents of Thanksgiving waft through the kitchen and I take my first bite of turkey and cranberry sauce, I feel that I have arrived home.

Recipe compliments of Barbara.

Sweet & White Potato Casserole

Serves 6-8

6 Medium white potatoes

1 can (1lb) vacuum-packed sweet potatoes (if you can only get yams in syrup, drain the syrup and rinse the yams)

¾ cup 2% or whole milk

¾ cup butter

2 teaspoons salt

Dash fresh ground pepper

  1. Pare and quarter the white potatoes. In boiling water, cook covered about 20 minutes, until tender.  Drain and return to large pot.
  2. In a small pot, heat the sweet potatoes over low heat. When warmed through, add to the white potatoes.
  3. In the same small pot, heat the milk and ½ cup of butter, until the butter melts.
  4. With electric mixer at low speed, mash the potatoes until smooth.  Gradually beat in the milk/butter mixture, salt and pepper. Beat until light and fluffy.
  5. Place mashed potatoes into a casserole dish.  Melt remaining butter and pour over the potatoes. Heat under a broiler for a minute to get a crispy top.
