William Donald Schaefer, former Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland, lay in state at the State House in Annapolis today. A motorcade carried the flag-draped casket to the State House, where it was carried inside by an honor guard made up of representatives from the State Government’s many agencies.
Current Gov. Martin O’Malley led the procession which paid respects to Schaefer, who served as Maryland’s 58th governor from 1987 to 1995. He died last week at the age of 89.
Schaefer lay in state in the Rotunda of the State House until 2 p.m., when his body was taken on a tour of the Baltimore landmarks he loved so much. There was to be another viewing in Baltimore City Hall through Tuesday, with the funeral and interment scheduled for Wednesday.
The former mayor and governor was known nationwide for his funny costumes and publicity stunts, such as splashing in the seal pool at the National Aquarium in Baltimore in 1981. He was also known for his devotion to his native city and state and to his fellow citizens.
