The easy way to sum up this week’s events in and around Annapolis are drinking to your health, eating a bunch of oysters and then engaging in rigorous tugs of war. It may read as a little vague but it’s all actually quite literal.
And not a little bit surprising either. With all the Halloween happenings safely in the rear view so begins the lull period before the holiday season truly beings. It’s not really a lull though – it’s about the best time to enjoy the Fall before Winter jumps in and on top of everyone.
To usher in this era the Ram’s Head Roadhouse will be throwing a release party for Old Dominion’s Baltic Porter beer. It’s apparently a bottom-fermented lager, and even though we spent some time on the homebrew train, we’re not exactly certain what that particular fermentation process entails or what flavors it imparts. Early guesses are that the beer is pretty excellent. The party at the Ram’s Head is on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. Glasses are $4 a pop and additional pours are $1 each.
On Friday at the Severna Park Community Center the Baltimore Washington Medical Center is offering a free health fair and free flu shots (for community members over 18) beginning at 2 p.m. As a multi-year recipient of a flu shot and a multi-year confirmed flu avoidant the convenience and ease of flu shots can’t be understated. And free is free. Other health screenings including foot, blood pressure and bone density.
On Saturday it’s Oysterfest at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum from 10-4 p.m. For museum members it’s free or with museum admission – it’s also free. There will be music, cooking demonstrations, there will be skipjack and buyboat rides and there will be cooking demonstrations. Most of all there will be oysters. Aquaculture, tonging and probably a sandwich or two will be available.
Once you have your fill of oysters you can celebrate either your Eastport-o-rican or Annapolitan pride by participating in the annual Slaughter Across the Water tug-of-war event. The first of seven tugs is scheduled for noon. But otherwise there will be food, bands and drinks. Teams are lining up at City Dock on the Annapolis side and 2nd Street in Eastport on that side. The proceeds go to local charities.
See? It makes its own kind of sense if you look at it from a certain angle. There are plenty of food and drink opportunities, plus some free vaccines and other scans if you take our suggestions. And to engage in righteous battle across the water from City Dock to Eastport? That event has been going on for 14 years – it’s bound to be a blast. Let’s see you out there.
NEXT WEEK: A Winter Walkabout that will end up at a Bull and Oyster roast.
