If it’s a secret that Annapolis is absolutely obsessed with its place in history and the depth of its own roots – it’s a poorly kept one. And if it’s a secret that people are forever searching for ghosts, poltergeists and other things that go bump in the night, it’s an equally poorly kept one.
Annapolis keeps things to do in the foremost place in its collective thoughts and a lot of those thoughts seem to hinge on the supernatural. Probably the best way to experience the supernatural is to prepare yourself adequately for the possibility that there is something out there. At least one way to make such preparations is beer.
Annapolis ghost tours began running Haunted Pub crawls last week, but we gave them a pass to get the kinks out until this week. Friday and Saturday nights meeting on the steps of the Maryland Inn on Main Street is the place to be, but ensure you have advance tickets in hand. The pub crawl costs $22. Keep an eye out for the Groupon. Belief is not required and neither are preparations. Personally, I like the image of volunteering to go into the next supposedly haunted area with a handful of meatball sub and munch my way through whatever creepiness supposedly infuses the surroundings. I just like the image.
Which makes the next option better for me – just a walking tour, no pubs involved. While some might need a bit of liquid courage to brave the haunted historical depths we prefer sandwiches. Call it a thing. This one meets at the same place but is $18 instead. Each tour begins at 9 and runs probably an hour and a half or so. It could be longer depending on your wandering spirit or shorter if something decides to pop up and scare everyone silly. If you’ve seen an Annapolis ghost please let us know because we’d love to tell that story.
For a far less intense experience, this Saturday kicks off the Annapolis Lights on the Bay. The lights are fired up from 5 to 10 p.m. every night until the New Year at the Sandy Point State Park. Passenger cars are $14 each and minivans are double. Some new displays are on tap, some secret and special new displays no one’s talking about yet. The only recourse is to see for yourself.
From now until the end of the month at Arundel Mills Santa will be setting up a special satellite office of the North Pole. Photos and presents will be available, plus toy donations collected for Santa of more than $10 get a special gift.
Annapolis’s pride in its own story is not a secret. Any number of places boast their historical significance in the area, and rightly so. It’s an old town. A lot has happened here and a lot continues to go on. There are any number of things to do at any given time. We remain but humble advisors, and so we shall continue to advise.
