Annapolis Art

Maryland Federation of Art holds a reception on Sunday, April 1, for its 35th Annual Art on Paper exhibit. The reception is from 1 to 3 p.m. and awards are presented at 4:30 p.m. The reception takes place in the main gallery. Check with www.mdfedart.com for additional information.

Acknowledging the accomplishments of women is vital, and this week, The Annapolis Collection Gallery does just that. Thursday, March 29, the gallery hosts a reception to commemorate the women in the War of 1812. Annapolis Entertainment

Bay Theatre presents a new play this week, The Belle of Amherst, by William Luce. This play follows Emily Dickinson’s life and desires to become a great poetess. The play opens Friday, March 30 at 8 p.m. Saturday has the same performance time. Sunday, April 1, you can see the matinee at 2 p.m. Procure tickets online at www.baytheatre.org.

The Spitfire Grill by The Colonial Players is still running this week. If you haven’t heard, this play centers on the comeback of a woman from jail who hopes to run the only restaurant in town. As ever, 49 West hosts interesting music groups. This Monday, enjoy a bountiful stage performance that features nine singer/songwriters who take turns performing. This event only costs $10 and runs from 7 to 11 p.m. Tuesday, the Unified Jazz Ensemble plays at 8:30 p.m. and costs $6. Wednesday, The DC Experience brings you guitar, bass, and drums on stage at 8 p.m. See this group for $6. Thursday, 49 West brings around another night of “Cafe Scientific” with Dr. Joan Maloof, from Salisbury University. Dr. Maloof will discuss the state of our forests and our ecosystems. While this event is academic, it offers essential information to continue thriving in our beautiful world. Head to 49 West at 6 p.m. for this event and enjoy no cover charge. Friday, String Theory, an almost sold-out show, visits the stage at 8 p.m. There are 22 seats left, so go to www.49westcoffeehouse.com as soon as possible to reserve your spot. This sextet takes on popular sounds like that of Nat King Cole and Benny Goodman–don’t miss it! Saturday, Victoria Vox and Katie Chambers play at 6:30 p.m.

If you’re looking to kick back, watch some talented bands, and maybe have a drink or two, head to Ram’s Head. March 26, Monday, Rachael Yamagata plays with Madi Diaz. The duo brings indie to an otherwise rocking place. These young hipsters play at 8 p.m. and cost $23.50 to watch. Friday, March 30, Hapa plays at 8 p.m. and costs $31 to see. Hapa doles out sweet, tropical tunes that are similar to the sounds of Hawaiian music. Get a pineapple drink and sway to the lovely melodies. On Saturday, Shawn Colvin plays indie/folk music at 8:30 p.m. Ticket admission is $55. Welcome the work week on Sunday with Asleep at the Wheel, a country band. Annapolis History

Though the past weekend marked another weekend full of historical fun, Historic Annapolis Foundation offers you even more this week. At the William Paca House on April 1, visitors can tour the house and grounds. A colonial character will guide tours from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. This event costs $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Green Annapolis

Want to get involved in something that’s beneficial for the community and Earth? The ladies who started Green Drinks in Annapolis, an environmental social, offer you a website chock full of information on living green. The website, www.annapolisgreen.com, also has a calendar of green events in the area for newcomers or social butterflies. This Wednesday, there’s a clean water rally scheduled. For the rally at the Statehouse, bring a photo of water that’s dirty, clean, or contaminated and advocate for better water in the area. Saturday, lace up your boots and slap on work gloves for the cleanup of Luce and Clements Creeks.
