Perhaps the single most significant and well-known aspect of the city, the United States Naval Academy, turns another year older on October 11. As such an integral part of the city, it’s only natural to offer our many thanks to USNA with birthday celebrations that span several days. On Wednesday, watch the USNA dress parade at Warden Field, where Mayor Josh Cohen, Governor Martin O’Malley, and Mark Ferguson of Naval Operations will speak. The Navy band will play, the USNA Drum & Bugle Corps will perform, and the pipe and drum corps will also perform. Get to the celebration through Gate 1 or 3. Make sure you bring a photo ID. Everything is free. Later on Wednesday, at 6:30, there is a worship service at the Navy chapel for free. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all host specials on Main Street and some other streets downtown. There are specials on artwork at Annapolis Collection Gallery, blueberry pancakes at Metropolitan, martinis at 49 West, and plenty other food and merchandise specials to be explored. Sport your Navy apparel and support the heart of the city.

Who doesn’t love a little nautical competition mixed with good friends, a bustling city, and October weather? The city of Annapolis certainly loves the idea. This week marks the end of the boat shows at City Dock. The show ends on Monday but picks up again on Thursday, October 11, and runs to Sunday, October 14. Thursday, catch peaceful, immaculate sailboats. The rest of the shows are geared toward high-powered speedboats. Peruse the gleaming white beauties, chat with friends, shop downtown, and eat at one of the many choices downtown Annapolis offers. Make a weekend of it!
