Doing good things for the people, community, and environment around you will never go out of style. It’s the do-good attitude and selfless positivity that make community events like the ones below so enticing. This July, take some time to partake in events that unite you with good people for good reasons.
Ram’s Head Tavern on West Street hosts an event tonight, July 5th, that benefits Arts in Annapolis. The night goes something like this: you purchase a $20 ticket to listen to four bands like Higher Hands and The Audissey perform at 8 p.m. While you enjoy yourself, the money you spent on ticket admission goes to benefiting the Annapolis Arts District via the Arts Council of Anne Arundel. It’s quite a simple premise, actually. The doors open at 7 p.m. Get your ticket soon; head to www.ramsheadonstage.com to do so.
One of the most notable and anticipated events in July is the Annapolis Irish Festival at the Anne Arundel County Fair. This event brings together all of Anne Arundel County for a festival (as you gathered from the name), but is more than just about having a good time. Come celebrate with live music, food, drinks, vendors, and neighbors to benefit both the Hospice of the Chesapeake and the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Groups like Gaelic Storm and The Gothard Sisters will perform. As this is an Irish-themed festival, there will be all sorts of vendors selling Irish treats, artsy pieces, and elegant jewelry. The festival spans two days: Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13. The hours of operation on Friday are: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, enjoy the festival from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The cost to get in is $20. For more information on this Irish benefit, head to www.annapolisirishfestival.com.
The following community events that benefit are not in Annapolis, but are still within feasible driving distance. After the Annapolis Irish Festival, the Birdies for the Bay Golf Tournament kicks off in Queenstown. Just over the bridge, this golf tournament–in its ninth year now–features rounds of golf in the great outdoors. How is playing golf on a team or individually beneficial? The entry fee ($125 per person or $500 per team) goes to funding the safety of the Chesapeake Bay via the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. The start time is 10 a.m.; end time is 3:30 p.m. The golf tournament is held at the lovely Queenstown Harbor Golf Club. Visit www.bayrestoration.org to sign up (you can also round up friends and sign up as a team!). This tournament is scheduled for Monday, July 15.
On Friday, July 19th, Easton hosts their 9th Annual Plein Air Competition. Coupled with this is the Plein Air Collectors’ Preview Party the same night. If you walk around downtown Annapolis in the summer, you are probably aware of what a plein air competition entails: setting up the easel outside and painting almost spontaneously. The result is original, interpretive, and very telling of the environment. Attend the reception for the competition and view all the works of art in the running for $20,000. The location of the reception is the Academy Art Museum on South Street. The tickets for the reception cost $150 per person but this ticket price goes to purchasing your very own artwork in the show. Thus, this show benefits talented local artists. For additional information, head to www.pleinaireaston.com.
In St. Michaels on July 6th, a night of big music is scheduled. The Big Band Night kicks off fireworks, dancing, food, and of course, music. The Onley Big Band is the main act that starts the night around 7 p.m. and ends it at 10 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and is free for children under the age of twelve. This event takes place on the lawn at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, so bring chairs and blankets for your comfort. Head to www.cbmm.org to learn more.
