The things to do this week are quite broad in terms of genre. Music, plays, competitions, green events, and more are scheduled under the label “Fun” this week.

Annapolis Entertainment

You may view USNA as excellent for many reasons, but is music one of them? The USNA Band performs throughout the summer at the heart of Annapolis: City Dock. The concert this week is inspired by next wave jazz. The entertainment begins at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, July 16. The concert is free and open to all. Head to www.usna.edu/USNABand for more information.

On the musical side of things, Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre bittersweetly ends their performance,

, this Sunday. The performance is a comical and chaotic one, which makes for quite a good show. The premise goes something like this: a few guy friends are tasked with what seems like the impossible: writing a musical with few resources and even less time. Catch the performance before it ends! Head to www.summergarden.com to acquire tickets.

Males and females alike enjoy competition–it’s just human nature. Add a little aesthetic quality to the mix and you’ve got yourself the America’s Miss Pageant, happening at the Main Theatre in Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. The young women will compete in the swimsuit competition, evening wear competition, and in interview. The battle of wits and beauty lasts from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. Tickets cost $30. Look to www.marylandhall.org to learn more.

At Ram’s Head on West Street, the music doesn’t stop (neither do the good times, but that’s something you’ll have to find out about for yourself). The music lined up for this week begins with Albert Castiglia, a blues musician, at 8 p.m. See Castiglia’s show for $15 on Monday. Tuesday, the winner of American Idol season 9, Lee Dweyze, takes the stage with Seth Giler for $20 at 8 pm. Blues/rock/funk group The Iguanas perform on Wednesday alongside The Crawdaddies for $22.50 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Matt Schofield brings his guitar music to the stage at 8 p.m. for a show that costs $22.50. Slim Man and David Back perform at Ram’s Head on Saturday for $22.50. The show begins at 8 p.m. Finally, on Sunday, Rehab performs with Grilled Lincolns at 8 p.m. for $21.50. This performance will be primarily that of hip-hop. To obtain tickets, go to www.ramsheadonstage.com.

Watermark Cruises recognizes that it’s not just you that likes to sail–dogs are just as enthusiastic about it. Thus, the sailing company in Annapolis hosts a dog-friendly cruise this Thursday, July 18 that costs adults $25, kids $15, and dogs $0. The cruise kicks off at 5:30 and returns around 7 p.m. This cruise is in benefit of the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. In other news, there are also two yoga cruises scheduled this Saturday and Sunday with Watermark. To learn about either the dog-friendly sail or the yoga cruise, head to http://cruisesonthebay.com.

More sailing, you say? Attend the Wednesday-night sail aboard the Stanley Norman, a skipjack famous around these parts. Learn about sailing practices, fishing for oysters, and about the preservation of the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. The sail kicks off from the Annapolis Maritime Museum in Eastport at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for the general public. Head to www.annapolisgreen.com to book your sail.

Annapolis Green

It’s important to be green in every city, but increasingly so here in Annapolis as we are so close to the Bay. Thanks to groups like Annapolis Green, we have access to the means and education for preserving the area waterways. The calendar on the site, www.annapolisgreen.com, shows that there are several educational events this week that teach everything from energy consumption to preserving the Bay. Additionally, the canoe excursion at the Smithsonian this Saturday teaches kids and adults the fun side of going green: getting out in nature and learning how to appreciate it firsthand. The canoe trip leaves on Saturday at 9 p.m. and costs $16. Head to the site above to learn more.

Annapolis Families

There is a revolution in food happening right now, and Annapolis is participating in it. Chefs all over are using interesting ingredients in innovative ways, allowing us to really connect with food. Kids can get in on this food revolution too thanks to “Cool Cooks” offered by The Chesapeake Children’s Museum. The three-hour long camp from this Monday to Friday (9 a.m. to noon) teaches young participants about healthy food and cooking in the hopes to inspire better eaters and cooks. The price is $150 per child. Parents are welcome to stay during the three hours to learn as well. To learn additional info on this event and the the one below, head to www.theccm.org.

Likewise, it is important to give attention to pets. The pet spa day at the CCM provides you the opportunity to do so. The price of a pet spa? $1 per pet. Give them a bath and pedicure. The pet spa is scheduled for July 21 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Annapolis History

Mondays are not necessarily historic, though thanks to Schooner Woodwind, Mondays in Annapolis can be as such. This Monday, take a two-hour sail around the Bay and learn about the black watermen community years ago. The sail costs $42 for adults and $27 for children. Departure time is 6:30 p.m. and the return time is 8;:30 p.m. For more about this historic sail, head to www.annapolis.org.
