Annapolis Entertainment
USNA Band entertains throughout the year, but not nearly as much as during summer. Live up the last bits of summer with live, free performances by the much loved USNA Band. The next one is coming up on Tuesday, August 13, and is held at City Dock at 7 p.m. Friday, August 16, USNA Band makes the short trek to Catonsville for another free concert, also at 7 p.m. These performances are open to all. Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre, located right around the corner from the bridge to Eastport, is hosting their final performance for the summer now through September 1. The show, entitled Into the Woods, is a hilarious and slightly naughty spin on classic fairytales and Grimm Brother nursery rhymes. The event that follows is totally free, includes art, demonstrations, and takes place downtown. What could be better? That’s right, it’s time again for downtown’s 23rd Annual Annapolis Art Walk, which takes place this Thursday, August 15. Galleries downtown will be open and ready to show off new exhibits, new artwork, and a peak into the art world for the general public. More than twenty galleries will participate in this downtown art fun, and some will even provide light refreshments. Ram’s Head starts the week right with music by popular artists. Tuesday, August 13, Nick Lowe hits the stage with Kim Richey at 8 p.m. for a show that costs $39.50. Wednesday, The James Hunter Six joins with Shayna Leigh for at show at 8 p.m. The ticket admission is $29.50. Thursday, Dan Navarro and Bob Sima take the stage at 8 p.m. for a show that costs $22.50. At the Annapolis Towne Centre, there’s free live music this Friday night. Blue Suede Bop teams up with Dean Rosenthal for a musical journey from the 50s to current hits. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and ends around 8:30 p.m. Head to www.visitatc.com to read more.
Annapolis Green
Canoeing presents the ideal opportunity to get outside, observe wildlife, and exercise the body’s muscles and mind. Join the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center this Saturday, August 17, for a canoe trip around the SERC’s surrounding creeks. The trip costs $16 for adults and $8 for children. Annapolis History
It’s another round of “Historic Mondays” with Schooner Woodwind and special guests. This Monday’s two-hour sail around the Chesapeake Bay is all about–what else–oysters! The beloved delicacy will be revealed in new ways, including the mysterious oyster wars entertained long ago by pirates and watermen. The host for the week is Sherri Marsh Jones. Annapolis Families
“Camp Kunta Kinte” is the title of kids’ favorite new summer activity. This camp, run by Chesapeake Children’s Museum, allows kids from ages three to ten to enjoy West African crafts, food, stories, and much more for two hours in the afternoon. The camp lasts from Monday, August 12, to Friday, August 16. The cost is $75 per child. Head to www.theccm.org for more on this event and the one that follows.
Also from the CCM, families can enjoy a free day of making and flying kites on Sunday, August 18. The afternoon flying festival runs from 1 to 4 p.m. and is free with admission to the museum.
