If you live in Annapolis, the significance of boating, sailing, cruising, or simply peering into the water is engrained into your ideology. An equal value placed on going green may not be part of the water-filled backdrop here, but once a year, boating and going green join forces to benefit all parties involved. We’ve got the details on how this year’s Annapolis Powerboat Shows are doing the sustainable thing. All you need to do is attend the boat show and do your part–recycle.
Lynne Forsman and Elvia Thompson, founders of Annapolis Green and informants on everything green happening in Annapolis, explained that there will be fifty “eco-stations” meant for recycling certain products. These stations will be “all bright and clearly marked, making it VERY clear what should be going where,” Forsman says.
“All of the eco-stations have been sponsored
Boatyard Bar & Grill, Galway Bay Irish Pub, The Loews Annapolis Hotel, Dream Yacht Charters, WEST Kitchen & Tavern, and Annapolis Accommodations all sponsor the eco-stations. Simply recycling that plastic bottle will validate the efforts of Annapolis Green and these businesses to create a cleaner Bay area.
Speaking of recycling products, one item we were surprised to hear about is carpet. The boat show exhibitors use removable carpets to protect the boat floors and create walkways, and these carpets are often discarded after the boat shows. After seeing dumpster upon dumpster full of discarded carpets, Forsman and Thompson devised a re-using plan for these carpets that will be enacted this year.
Just think–the longstanding boat shows (42nd year for the powerboat show and 44th year for sailboat show, respectively) bring in more than 100,000 people to City Dock, generating tons of waste. This Red Light Recycle! initiative is part of Annapolis Green’s Festival Greening program, which has established serious recycling power at festivals and community events across the county.
As far as the boat shows go, the powerboats will wow as they have in years previous. City Dock will be bustling with serious boat buyers and dreamers alike, though all are welcome. This Thursday through Sunday, October 3-6, the show will commence. You can find more information about the boat shows on the following link: US Boat Shows. Annapolis Green’s site has more information about Red Light Recycle and upcoming green social events.
Happy and green boat perusing!
