College football bowl season is upon us. Over the next month, the best teams in the NCAA will lay it all on the line for bragging rights in their respective matchups, culminating in January with the first ever NCAA Division I playoff to decide this year’s national champion. Teams spent all season fighting for an opportunity at post-season play and the chance to compete in front of the entire country against an unfamiliar foe; but one late-season matchup has been set in stone since 1890 and has been one of the most anticipated contest of the entire college football season ever since.
If it isn’t completely obvious, we are talking about the annual Army-Navy game- a clash that is bigger than the sport of football itself. For more than a century, Navy Midshipmen have battled the Army Black Knights on the gridiron in the most compelling 60 minutes in American sports. This year, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is looking to claim his 7th straight victory over Army, and the Naval Academy’s 13th consecutive Thompson’s Cup.
The 115th edition of ‘America’s Game’ game returns to our backyard this year as the rivalry renews at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Saturday, December 13. Kick-off is set for 3pm and the game can be viewed on CBS.
The Navy squad has carried over its momentum from last season, which was capped off with a decisive victory in the Armed Forces Bowl, and is on the verge of becoming bowl eligible once again, thanks, in large part, to its unquestioned leader- Junior quarterback, Keenan Reynolds. After becoming the first freshman QB in 2 decades to start an Army-Navy game in 2012, Keenan Reynolds is seeking his 3rd career win over his team’s arch rival in as many opportunities.
The Army-Navy game is always special, and the 2014 edition will be no different. From the pre-game pageantry, tailgating traditions and team marches to cannons exploding and spectators doing push-ups in the crowd after each touchdown, the Army-Navy rivalry is an all-encompassing experience that transcends the sport of football and is a must-see event for all sports fans, and Americans.
