Enjoy live music, museum exhibits, Valentine’s Day entertainment, and green events this week in Annapolis.
Annapolis Entertainment
February means three things in Annapolis: Valentine’s activities, Black History Month entertainment, and Restaurant Week. Unfortunately, Restaurant Week is toward the end of the month, but we can enjoy Valentine’s Day and some Black History Month happenings now. For example, Annapolis Yacht Club offers a special dinner at the Club with the kids on Valentine’s night. There will be entertainment for you and the kids, all starting at 6 p.m. The price is $12.95 per person.
Or, try the rip-roaring performance hosted by Maryland Hall entitled Once Upon a Mattress on Valentine’s. This performance is the one Carol Burnett performed in years ago. The show time is 7:30 and the ticket price is $43. More Valentine’s events can be found on Annapolis.com.
If you watch any of the food and cooking channels, you know that donuts and sweet confections have become all the rage in the food world. The Colonial Players jump on the dessert bandwagon in their own way–with acting of course! Superior Donuts, the new show which opens on Valentine’s Day, follows two donut-shop hopefuls with very different backgrounds and mentalities. Between the banter, the growth of friendship, and the laughs, this performance is sure to please. Tickets are available on The Colonial Players.
Like Restaurant Week, many of the Black History Month events occur later in the month. However, the Banneker-Douglass Museum welcomes visitors to their Deep Roots, Rising Waters exhibit that’s free and open to the public. This exhibit tells of the historical backdrop for African Americans from the 1600s to today. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at Black History Month Events in Annapolis.
The Naval Academy isn’t the only musical military group around here. The United States Air Force performs a free New Orleans jazz-inspired concert for the public on February 12 at 7 p.m. Annapolis Middle School hosts this even that covers a musical landscape from Louis Armstrong to Bix Beiderbecke. Adults and kids alike will enjoy this lively performance. For more information, visit Heritage of America Band on the Web.
Water cruises may be over till April, but walking tours guided by knowledgeable Colonials are still in full swing. This Saturday, Watermark hosts two tours: the “Four Centuries” tour and the “African American Heritage” tour. The first tour departs at 1:30 p.m.; the second leaves at 1 p.m. Both tours require tickets that can be purchased at the kiosk at City Dock. Tours last over one hour. Go to Watermark Walking Tours to learn more.
Rams Head on Stage is comprised of live performers, a comfortable setting, clear sounds, and local people. Be part of the landscape there this week, starting with Steve Earle’s solo acoustic performance on Tuesday. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and costs $49.50. Wednesday Patrizio performs at 8 p.m. for $39.50. The Autumn Defense and Dawn Landes perform Thursday at 8 p.m. This folk-style show costs $18.50. Friday, Valentine’s Day, Rams Head welcomes Foreplay to perform at 8 p.m. for $38. This performance benefits the Heart Health Foundation. Saturday and Sunday, the Johnny Winter Band and Damon Fowler team up at 8 p.m. Each show costs $45. Learn more about these shows at Rams Head online.
Annapolis Art
Spend your Valentine’s on West Street is completely possible–the live music at Rams Head, the delicious restaurants, and, thanks to Annapolis Collection Gallery, even the local art is enticing. Valentine’s night, you and your sweetheart have the chance to meet three local artists: Greg Harlin, Janet Fry Rogers, and Ann Munro Wood. Discuss technique and style with the talent while enjoying free refreshments. This event is open to all from 7 to 8 p.m. Go to www.annapoliscollection.com to read more about this event.
Annapolis Green
Green enthusiasts and those simply interested in our effect on Earth turn to Annapolis Green as a comprehensive resource. This week, Annapolis Green tells of a unique opportunity to learn about beekeeping at the Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center in Millersville. The workshop meets on Wednesdays, starting on February 12. This is a beginner-level workshop that yields some sweet results (pun intended). This workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more on this event and the one below, visit Annapolis Green.
Also on February 12, Quiet Waters Park hosts a Master Naturalist Training workshop from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The price for this four-month training program is $250. Participants can learn how to teach classes to the public, lead field trips, and ultimately, become more familiar with Maryland’s coastal dynamic.
