A picture may be worth a thousand words but a film is arguably much more entertaining. Annapolis thinks so too, as evidenced by the much-anticipated Annapolis Film Festival, coming your way March 27-30, 2014. The festival brings over seventy films, premieres, discussion panels, Q&As with movie makers, special appearances, and parties all done to celebrate the power and beauty of film. With all the chances to discuss, watch, and be entertained by a diversity of films, it’s no wonder the Annapolis Film Festival’s slogan is “Talk Movie to Me.” Want to know what’s happening, where, and when? Stay tuned (pun intended) right here to learn all there is to it.
What is it?
The Annapolis Film Festival was founded on a mission to celebrate independent films, feature films, documentaries, and digital shorts that cover a range of topics and are suitable for a range of ages. This event is built around film but is done with the community in mind. Further, this event speaks to what many already know: Annapolis is the locus for inventive and creative arts.
As you’ll see in the brief schedule below (or on www.annapolisfilmfestival.net), discussions, events, premieres, and film screenings comprise this beloved festival.
Thursday night kicks off the event with a feature film and after party. Maryland Hall hosts a screening of Jamesy Boy.
Friday welcomes panel discussions including topics like: making film in Maryland, crow funding, indie film financing, and more. Films that correlate to panel discussions will be played as well.
Saturday brings more panel discussions and film screenings: environmentalism in films, women in films, and more. Saturday night, WEST. Kitchen & Tavern hosts a film party at 9 p.m. Guests who attend this party must have a ticket, but receive a free drink, hors d’oeuvres, and socializing with film enthusiasts and crew members with live DJ music in the background. From 10 p.m. to midnight, Bay Theatre welcomes festival guests to enjoy short horror films.
Sunday, tons of digital shorts about love, globalism, and youth will be show. Additionally, Maryland Hall hosts “Best of the Fest” Sunday at 5 p.m., an event that awards films voted the best in certain categories.
Films that will be shown deal with love, intense hate, shame, growth, and transcendence. Synopses for films and showing times can be found on the link above.
Who is behind it?
The Annapolis Film Festival is comprised of several board members, all highly qualified. Some work as film professors, others have worked as producers for major television programs, and others are creative geniuses.
The Loews Hotel is also in part to thank for the film festival, as it functions as “Festival Central.” Accommodations for film goers are of course available, but in addition, Loews offers directions to film locations, schedules, film festival passes, maps, festival news, and official festival merchandise. Loews will begin to receive festival guests at 2 p.m. March 24 for questions and all else.
Who participates?
Everyone! The public is invited. Some films may even be appropriate for youth. You’ll see directors, actors, producers, and plenty of influential people in film.
When and where is it?
Various venues host film screenings and panel discussions throughout the four-day festival: Banneker-Douglass Museum, Bay Theatre, O’Callaghan Hotel, Loews Hotel, Maryland Hall, St. Anne’s Church, and St. John’s College.
To alleviate stress from traveling from one screening to the next, the Circulator will escort guests from Gott’s, Hillman, Knighton, and Park Place Garages to festival venues. The Circulator will run from 6:30 a.m. to midnight Thursday and 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
How much is it?
The festival pass is by far the best value, not only because festival pass holders get priority seating, but because holders are permitted access to everything minus the Saturday night party. This pass costs $75 for 26+ and $40 for 25 and younger.
A one-day pass costs $30 per person.
A ticket to a film or panel costs $10.
A ticket to opening night screening and party costs $30.
A ticket to Saturday night party at WEST. Kitchen & Tavern costs $30. This price includes one free drink and hors d’oeuvres.
Tickets can be purchased on www.annapolisfilmfestival.net. Online purchasing ability closes at midnight on March 18. Tickets can also be purchase on site.
There is limited seating for each film, so purchasing tickets ahead of time will ensure your spot in the theater.
What else should you know?
The festival coordinators suggest arriving at least twenty minutes early to each screening. Seating is done on a priority basis: festival pass holders receive first dibs, previously-purchased ticket holders receive the next seating, and those who purchase tickets on site are offered seating last.
Drinks and food are not allowed inside.
Happy viewing!
