If you see folks dressed in bright green, plaid, and even kilts around March 17, you may think St. Patrick’s Day is responsible. Though St. Patrick’s Day in Annapolis is sure to be a green affair, we can’t skip over the Eastport Democratic Club’s Annual Green Beer Races, held on March 15. You’ll see friends, neighbors, and Annapolitans, dressed in Irish style, racing with cups of green beer, participating in activities, and enjoying this outdoor event. We supply you with the vitals below. All you have to do is attend!

What is it?

The Annual Green Beer Races offer a chance for the community to rally behind Irish-themed friendly competition. Everyone is invited, including kids and the dog. In a nutshell, this event is the chance to drink beer and celebrate St. Patrick’s in an unconventional, active way.

Who is behind it?

The Eastport Democratic Club, founded in 1929, is to thank for this event.

When is it?

Saturday, March 15, is the date of the event. It begins at noon and ends around 8 p.m.

Where is it?

The Eastport Democratic Club, located at 525 State Street, will host the green beer races. Street parking and parking at the club are the options.

What kid-friendly and pet-friendly fun is offered?

This event is ideal for the entire family. In fact, it seems to have been designed around offering races for every age in the family. Kids can enjoy the bean bag toss and the green Kool-Aid races. Watching the adults race will also be enjoyable.

As this event is held outside, pets are welcome. In fact, your well-dressed dog could win you a prize in the “Best Dressed Pooch” competition. In the past, dog owners have even gone so far as to painting the dog’s nails bright green. Top hats, capes, and other doggie apparel may be safer (and easier).

What adult-friendly activities are offered?

Adults–both men and women–can participate in tosses and races. There is a women’s keg toss and a men’s keg toss. The green beer races are, by far, the most entertaining event and function as a bracketed tournament. There will be teams and individuals racing for bragging rights and prizes.

As for the green beer races, participants must balance the beer on a tray and race to the finish line.

Aside from the races and tosses, adults can enjoy live entertainment from The Teelin Irish Dance Company and The Eastport Oyster Boys.

Lastly, the “Cutest Leprechaun” will be awarded a prize.
