With the blooming of spring comes the burst of more great events around Annapolis. This week, enjoy live performances, nature walks, cruises, crafty events, and of course, the annual USNA/St. John’s croquet match.

Annapolis Entertainment

USNA and St. John’s participate in an old-time tradition this week–the annual croquet match. This event happens on Saturday, April 12 and is open to all. In fact, the general public is encouraged to bring picnic baskets, the family, and wear fancy hats indicative of this beautiful tradition. The USNA Band, a much acclaimed and talented group, performs live at the Naval Academy Main Chapel this Friday, April 11. The performance is in their classic style, which ranges from classic music to contemporary tunes. USNA offers another great performance this week, though from a different source. The music department encourages all to take pleasure in Beethoven: Symphony 9 as performed by Annapolis Symphony and the USNA Glee Clubs. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts hosts a ballet performance called Director’s Choice this week. This ballet is elegant and lives up to all you would expect in a classic show. The show is held Saturday, April 12 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Romeo and Juliet, perhaps the most famous and well-loved plays, is still on stage at Compass Rose Theatre. The Compass Rose version follows the original. Tickets are on sale now–purchase them via www.compassrosetheatre.org.

Not into classical performances? Try The Colonial Players’ Bat Boy, The Musical. This show catalogs the experiences of a young mutant who’s secret is spilled. Annapolis History

St. John’s College isn’t just a lovely part of the downtown Annapolis landscape–it hosts quite interesting events open to the public. Mitchell Gallery is mostly what appeals to the public but this Tuesday, history buffs can enjoy a lecture: “Annapolis 1864: We Scarcely Meet Anyone We Know.” This lecture features Annapolis information and stories from the Civil War period. Annapolis Green

Bacon Ridge Natural Area is a beautiful, untouched 900-acre preservation of woods, wetlands, and streams not usually open to the public. This Sunday, April 13, however, the public is invited to walk through these woods. Scenic Rivers Land Trust and Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation have teamed up to offer this great opportunity for a one to four mile hike. Annapolis Families

Spring offers the chance for families to get out and about to experience Annapolis, especially thanks to performances such a the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis’s Pippi Longstocking. This treasured show is comedic, heart-warming, and ideal for the entire family. The play follows Pippi, an unconventional hero with superpowers and enough energy and freckles for all. The Historic Annapolis Museum and Store offers a Crepe Paper Flower Crafting event this Saturday, April 12. Learn how to craft beautiful pieces of paper-made art as instructed by a professional.
