When it comes to entertainment, few cities can beat Annapolis thanks to its close proximity to various waters, vast history, and incredible venues. Up first this week is none other than entertainment by Schooner Woodwind. This sailing company offers extended tours September 1-3 to accommodate for the Labor Day weekend. Not to be outshined by cruises, the music scene shows off new acts at both 49 West Coffeehouse and Ram’s Head. At 49 West, nine singer/songwriters take to the stage on Monday to give the crowd flavors of their work. The cover charge is $10. The entertainment begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday, listen to Unified Jazz Ensemble at 8:30 p.m. for $6. Wednesday, Susan Jones Trio performs on violins from 8 to 11 p.m. for $6. Thursday, education and coffee combine for Cafe Scientifique. Dr. Stuart S. Martin teaches on cancer cells. There’s no cover charge. Also on Thursday, Rob Levit Group performs for $6 at 8:30 p.m. Friday, cellist/ukulele player duo of Victoria Vox and Katie Chambers perform for $12 at 8 p.m. Saturday, Mary Alouette & The Djams perform gypsy jazz at 8 p.m. for $20. Ram’s Head pleases with varied musical genres this week. On Tuesday, Eric Sardinas & Big Motor perform blues music at 8 p.m. for $20. Wednesday, Hot Tub Limo performs upbeat tunes at 8 p.m. for $15. Thursday, The Family Stone rocks with classic funk music at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. These shows cost $29.50 each. Friday, The Atomic Punks & 5150 entertain with music reminiscent of early Van Halen. See these groups for $22.50 at 8 p.m. Saturday, Kenny Lattimore swoons with R&B sounds at 7 p.m. for $35. At Maryland Hall, guests can listen to jazz music by Zach Smith & Dixie Power Trio on Wednesday for free. This event is held in memory of one of the founders of Maryland Hall. Smith begins playing on the lawn at 6 p.m. Guests should bring seating and are welcome to pack food and drinks. The 2012 Drum Corps World Championship comes to Annapolis on September 1 and 2, offering the area yet another chance to enjoy live music. Eastport’s Drum and Bugle Corps team is composed of nearly 70 members, whose ages range from 4 to 82. This music show is unlike any other: there is choregoraphy, tons of instruments respresented, and marching. This event takes place at the Navy Stadium and does require tickets. Here’s another way to get out in the city and celebrate something great–the Labor Day Parade downtown! The festivities begin at 2 p.m. at West Street. From West Street, follow the parade to Main Street, then to City Dock, and finally, to Susan Campbell Park. Bring the kids, grandparents, and dog for the fun on Sunday.

Annapolis Green

It’s everyone’s favorite time again–Green Drinks! This eco-friendly social event takes place at the new WEST restaurant in Loews Hotel. The whole event is free and reservations are not required; just attend in the hopes to learn about ways to go green and socialize with other go-greeners. Green Drinks takes place on Tuesday, August 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Want a little sailing with your green event? Thursday marks the 8th “Celebrate the Severn Fundraiser.” This fundraiser requires no cookie sales or car washes; Severn Riverkeeper Program raises funds in true Annapolis style with a cruise down the Severn River! There are limited spots, so reserve today. Tickets cost $125 per person or $200 per couple.

Somehow, hearing birds chirp makes any day more delightful. Celebrate and learn more about birds with a birdwalk at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary on September 1. This event allows attendees to stroll around the wetlands and observe birds in their natural habitat. The birdwalk takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Here’s yet another way to celebrate nature while exercising: Contee Watershed Trail Hike on Saturday. Attendees hike from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and look for plants, animals, and other forms of wildlife. Kids above eight are encouraged to attend. Annapolis History

This week is a big one for historical events too! On Monday, there’s the opportunity to sail the waters aboard Schooner Woodwind and learn about USNA and the city of Annapolis. Departure is 5:30 p.m. and return is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $39 for adults and $25 for kids.

Saturday awards Annapolitans with the chance to experience two valuable feelings: anticipation at the opening of Bonefish Grill and feeling good about yourself for benefitting historic Annapolis. Historic Annapolis teams up with Bonefish Grill at Annapolis Towne Center for the opening and “Charity Night,” where guests can enjoy decadent food, drinks, and music for the good of the city. Space is limited. Tickets cost $35 per person, which includes food and two drinks. The event runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

At William Paca House, history is always present, but this week, it can be viewed in the present with a tour from a colonial. This guided tour takes participants through the Paca house and gardens from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for kids. The tour takes place on Sunday.
