We have spent and will spend a great deal of time celebrating the holiday things to do in Annapolis, and we will continue because it’s the spirit of the season, but we shall also try to feature and highlight the Annapolis events not wholly concerned with those traditions at the expense of others.

Lots of people celebrate the end of the year in ways personal to themselves and with an absence of reindeer and sleighs. This is why we support the importation of reindeer into Annapolis and the surrounding area because they are way cool and interesting to look at. True, we have a deer problem already and who knows how they will adjust to our climate but I’m sure an accord could be made. No? Well OK we’ll just stuff it back into the “pointless dreams” folder with all the others.

If you’re in the D.C. area sometime in the next week or so know that the 22nd Washington Jewish Film festival starts on Thursday, December 1. It runs until the 11th, so there’s no rush unless there’s a film you’re desperate to see – which is entirely possible. All of the films will bring to life different aspects of the Jewish experience through a variety of means. New features, award-winning classics, shorts and documentaries will be shown at the Aaron and Cecile Goldman Theater. There will be other venues around the District and in Maryland but the Goldman Theater is a good place to start.

It’s been a while since the pressure of the SATs have been bearing down on this humble yet egomaniacal writer – and we’re not sure if this is the proper time for such things, but the Sylvan Learning Center is sponsoring this event and they would know better than we when the proper timing of the test is. What they are offering is a free practice test and evaluation with same-day results. So if the SAT is concerning you as much as it did us years ago this is a welcome change to square your test-taking abilities away.

There’s an odd connection with railroads and culture – and it permeates the holiday season as well. Queen Anne’s Railroad Society and the Queen Anne’s Museum of Eastern Shore life are putting on a model train expo at the Old Kent Narrows Outlets on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. Layouts in a number of different scales will be on display and admission is free. Novice efforts can be void of details, we’re left curious as to how the pros do it.

We’re certain there will be plenty of opportunities to meet Santa or go shopping in Annapolis in the coming weeks, so this respite is likely the calm before the storm. It may be the only respite for you as well, because activities tend to ramp up quite high before the end of the year. Holiday spirit and all that is a nice idea but can be more stressful than celebratory at times, so be sure to take a second or two for yourselves in the coming weeks. We hope to help you do just that.
