There are live concerts, new shows, green events, and cruises to attend this week in Annapolis. We suggest you clear your calendar for the enormity of fun happening in your city!

Annapolis Entertainment

One of the most cherished events of summer (and all year long, perhaps) is the Wednesday Night Race Series from the Annapolis Harbor. This week, the races are back! Bring the family for the triumphant return of the participating boats around 8 p.m. every Wednesday to the Harbor. It’s free, fun, and easy. See more about the races at www.annapolisyc.com.

Cruising should truly be its own category in this post, thanks to the superb aquatic opportunities companies like Watermark and Schooner Woodwind provide. This Wednesday, the ever popular Wednesday night sailboat races return to the Annapolis Harbor, and Watermark has a cruise in celebration of this Annapolis tradition. The cruise costs $32 for adults and $18 for kids. The benefit of the cruise is simple: get a better view of the racing action! The departure time is 6 p.m. and the return time is 8 p.m., when the racing boats return. Happy hour appetizers are included; drinks are available for purchase. Go to www.watermarkcruises.com to book your spot now.

It’s a week of great live music here in Annapolis. To kick start the musical week, the US Navy Band Commodores perform at City Dock in a free concert that’s appropriate for all audiences. Take the family, friends, or coworkers out in downtown Annapolis for dinner before the show at 7 p.m. and then shop around afterward. Make it a night downtown–we promise you’ll have a good time. The group plays for about an hour. For more details, visit www.usna.edu.

In the musical realm, shows that celebrate past eras in great music or events are arguably the best received. This the case with the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre’s performance, Shout! The Mod Musical, happening through July 19. If you haven’t caught the show yet, know that it centers on a few women in the 1960s who are in the midst of women’s liberation, swing music, and other historical events. The show is fun-loving, entertaining, and ideal for viewing with girlfriends or the whole family. Visit www.summergarden.com to learn more and purchase tickets.

Another favorite performance venue, The Colonial Players’ theatre in Annapolis, hosts a new show this week, entitled This or That. The overall performance is split into two slates, with “This” performances happening on July 17 and 19 of this week; “That” performances happen on July 18 and 20. Each slate provides a series of one-act plays sure to please. See the full schedule and ticket prices at www.thecolonialplayers.org.

For the intellectuals and curious minds out there, try the St. John’s Wednesday Night Lecture Series, happening throughout the summer. This week’s installment is facilitated by Jeff J.S. Black. Black will discuss “On High Mountains: An Overview of Nietzsche’s Perspectivism.” Get close and personal with the views of this famous and influential German philosopher via this lecture. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Great Hall. This event is free and open to all. For additional details, please head to www.sjc.edu.

Want a lighter version of summer entertainment? Try the Annapolis Maritime Museum Summer Concert Series, held at the museum for free every Thursday this summer. This week, Higher Hands, a funky soulful group, will perform. Beer, wine, and cocktails are available for purchase to elevate the evening. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Visit www.amartime.org to peruse the upcoming concerts.

Annapolis Green

Don’t have a kayak but desire some time on the water? Attend the community kayaking in Shady Side at Discover Village this Thursday from 5 p.m. to sunset. Anyone is invited and kayak use is free, just done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Go to www.annapolis.com to read more.

This next entry doesn’t necessarily qualify as an event, but rather, as a necessary happening. The Millersville Landfill & Resource Recovery Facility in Severn hosts a hazardous waste drop-off day as part of Anne Arundel County’s waste drop-off series. Get rid of motor oil, fuels, and other toxics the safe, responsible way. This is free and open to all. The facility will receive toxics from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Go to www.annapolisgreen.com to learn more about this happening.
