In Annapolis, sailing isn’t just entertainment–for some, it’s a way of life. Thanks to Schooner Woodwind and Watermark, sailing and cruising for those who don’t work on the water are possible. This Sunday, June 16, Schooner Woodwind prepares for one great sail in honor of fathers. The “Take Dad Sailing” package is perfect for a family cruise at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. This cruise lasts two hours–plenty of time to make dad feel special. Annapolis Green

In Annapolis, being green, like sailing as I introduced before, is an important way of life. Thus, numerous events, organizations, and volunteer opportunities pop up all over the city and even county. Annapolis Green, one of the most active and significant green organizations, puts on their sociable “Green Drinks” again this Tuesday, June 11. The location for this eco-friendly social event, as they have dubbed it, is held at The Westin Annapolis Hotel from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and only requires you to have an open mind and ear to learn about what your neighboring people and businesses do to sustain the Earth.

On Thursday, June 13, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater hosts an event that celebrates the West and Rhode Rivers with a cruise. This sunset cruise will teach you about agriculture and the local land while you enjoy the breezes on open waters. The cost of this event is $75 and there are a limited number of seats. The starting time is 6 p.m. and the ending time is two and a half hours later.

Also at the Smithsonian, there is a canoe excursion open to all levels of paddlers on Saturday, June 15. This event rewards all who attend the chance to exercise, learn about native plants and animals, and enjoy nature. Paddlers will navigate the Muddy Creek and Rhode River from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $16 for adults and half that price for kids.

At the Chesapeake Ecology Center on Clay Street in Annapolis, participate in planting trees and other native plants. This is a volunteer opportunity that lasts from 9 to noon. If you enjoy planting at the Ecology Center, plant at the Captain Avery Museum too on Saturday morning! The planting is scheduled for the same hours.

On Saturday morning at the Hillsmere Community Beach, their annual kayak adventure begins. Enjoy some kayaking, picnicking afterward, and enjoying the company of others. The kayak trip sets off at 9 a.m. from the beach. The whole event should last until about 1 p.m. For more on these green events, head to www.annapolisgreen.com.
