This week in September will most likely allow us to exist between summer and full-fledged fall weather. This type of weather is perfect for enjoying festivals and outdoor activities–all of which are scheduled for the week. Take a peak at what’s going on in your town below.
Annapolis Entertainment
The Spa Creek Festival kicks off this Labor Day, from 1 to 7 p.m. Music, locally catered food, drinks, and activities all will be available at the festival. Fine art by local artists will also be on display. The festival takes place at–you guessed it–the beaches of Spa Creek, behind St. Mary’s Church. Parking is free at the church. Tickets are required. The USNA Band plays both close to home and in Chestertown this week. The first performance is at Washington College in Chestertown, and features classical and contemporary tunes to be performed from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. From this Thursday performance to Saturday’s show, the USNA Band brings a 9/11 commemoration to Annapolis at the Maryland WWII Memorial. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts presents their annual Arts Alive event this Friday, September 6. The show is a fundraising opportunity for art funding and programs. The festivities kick off at 6 p.m. and end around 11 p.m. Tickets cost $150 per person. Visit www.marylandhall.org to learn more.
What better way to enjoy Labor Day than with sailing? Watermark Cruises provides a few special cruises this Monday. Cruises around the Naval Academy, Spa Creek, Severn River, Thomas Point Lighthouse, and Chesapeake Bay Bridge are all available with tickets ranging from $14-23 for adults and $5-10 for kids. Ram’s Head provides typical great musical performances and unconventional performances this week. This Wednesday, try out the “Wine & Canvas” event at 5:30 p.m. This show provides attendees the chance to create a piece of art on canvas while enjoying cocktails. Instructors will be on stage to guide you through the creative process. For $35, you can participate and take home your piece of art. Thursday, The Persuasions take to the stage for a show that begins at 8 p.m. and costs $25. Saturday, The Young Dubliners join with Girsa to perform at 8:30 p.m. for $22.50. Sunday, all ages are welcome to the poetry reading at 1 p.m. that costs $15. Later on Sunday (8 p.m.), Sarah Jarosz performs for the adult crowd. Jarosz’s show costs $18.50. Annapolis Green
The end of a stifling summer translates to more outdoor activities. Benefit the Earth and local community by volunteering and/or participating in green events this week! First up, the free kayaking excursion in Shady Side occurs on Thursday, September 5. Boating vessels are provided but on a first-come, first-serve basis. Head to Discovery Village at 5 p.m. to partake in this free opportunity. Next, the canoe excursion at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Learn about native plants and wildlife as you paddle the Muddy Creek and Rhode River in Edgewater. This boating trip is not free: adults must pay $14 and children must pay $7.
Aside from the two boating activities, the Chesapeake Ecology Center also offers you the chance to get outside on Saturday. Annapolis History
This “History Monday” aboard one of the Schooner Woodwind ships celebrates Annapolis in all its historical and current splendor. The topic for the educational sail is “A Tale of Two Cities: United States Naval Academy and Annapolis.” Learn about the value of both as individual entities and together.
