Boats boating and more boats. We can’t contain it. We can’t deny it so we’re not even going to try. Sure, it doesn’t start until Oct. 6 but it’s never too early to get ahead of the curve. It is, however too early to get a reliable weather forecast so we’re going to wing it and say that it’s going to be 80 degrees and sunny with no wind until Thanksgiving.

So that’s the unreliable part of this week’s recommendations. This is the dead on hard truth portion and this is what you’re going to want to be doing in between beats of boatmania.

It’s as good a time as any to hit up the Naval Academy and take a tour. There are boats at the Naval Academy and it is well established that we enjoy boat-related activities. During the week the tours run from 10 to 3, from 9:30 to 3 on Saturday and from noon until 3 Sunday. Adults pay less than a movie — ($9.50); school-age children and seniors are less and preschoolers are free.

The Renaissance Fair is still going on and will continue until October 23. If you haven’t been there’s reason enough right there to give it a go. We’re not saying it’s something that will happen but the potential exists for a random stranger to challenge you to joust or duel or something else suitably medieval. Or renaissance, we suppose. That’s not something that happens everywhere and enough reason for a look. Also: Smoked Turkey legs.

We’ve been nice and patient with all the words until this point and we shall remain so even though it’s time for the boating fever to begin. Perhaps you’ve noticed the United States Sailboat Show begins October 6 and runs through the 10th. After that, the Powerboat show picks up on the 13th and continues until the 16th.  On Saturday October 8, and this is important, there is a Navy home football game. Special alternative parking will be allowed on Riva Road. Bus transportation will be provided, so come prepared. In the interest of preparing you, GPSers should begin their search at 2700 Riva Road for best results.

See you next week as boatmania continues in a suitably dignified fashion.
