Christmas isn’t the only time drums come out with songs like “The Little Drummer Boy”; the Drum Corps Associates World Championships take place this weekend in Annapolis! This free event brings together teams from across the nation, and even showcases the talent in our very own city. Witness the action and hear the melodies as teams compete for the championship title at the Navy Stadium this Friday through Sunday. Below, you’ll learn about the weekend’s activities, schedule, and the Annapolis team.
To kick things off on Friday, there are performances in individual, ensemble, and mini corps. These performances begin at 4 p.m. On Saturday, watch the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) preliminary round at 2 p.m. Sunday sees the most excitement, as both special performances by alumni corps and the DCA finals occur. The alumni show takes place at 10 a.m., whereas the championship final is scheduled for 5 p.m. Make sure to cheer extra loud for Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps.
Of the teams participating, the most dear to our hearts is the Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps. This team isn’t like any regular middle or high school band; Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps teaches the city’s at-risk youth professionalism, responsibility, and how to work on a team. Learning these valuable lessons comes easily when paired with music in a friendly setting. And thanks to the fun and bonding, the membership grew from less than ten to around seventy in four years. The dramatic increase in participants demonstrates the effect and significance of this group. As for the other competitors, there are at least one hundred individuals scheduled to play and an upwards of fifteen teams playing together. The instruments will be varied and the anticipation off the charts. Catch some brass music, drumming, and more. Competitors are given five minutes to perform. Annapolis is prepared for the influx of traffic due to the championship, and thus, provides more coverage by the Circulator. The trolley will pick up attendees from Herbert Sachs Blvd. across from the stadium and travel into West Annapolis. The trolley stops on most populated streets in West Annapolis including Ridgley Avenue, Annapolis Street, Giddings Avenue, and Melvin Avenue. People can also catch the Circulator if coming from near Church Circle. This route travels to local attractions and restaurants in downtown Annapolis. The cost for this easy and fabulous service? Two bucks per person roundtrip or four bucks for an all-day pass. Pay the driver upon boarding. Who says getting around Annapolis in the midst of a popular event has to be a burden? Attend, ride the trolley, and cheer!
