As promised we’re going to be looking at a Winter Walkabout as well as a couple of Bull and Oyster roasts, which we’ll supplement with a glance across the bridge over to Easton Waterfowl Festival.
The weather is looking clear and gorgeous this weekend so all sorts of outdoor options become available. Sunday does look a bit cloudier than Saturday but there isn’t a huge chance of rain reported on either day. Instead plan for a clear Fall weekend and all that entails.
To that end, wander out to State Circle or Maryland Avenue between 3 and 8 p.m. on Friday for their Winter Walkabout – and help Food Link for Maryland simultaneously. The stores there will be serving light refreshments including wine and opening their doors wide to all comers. Local celebrities will be putting in appearances and groups the Old Timers and Barbershop Quartet will be doing their own type of wandering – walking, to be sure, but also singing and serenading at the same time. Though the chance of rain is small, the rain date is set for Sunday during the same hours.
Later that night, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Farleigh Heights volunteer fire company, a Bull and Oyster roast will be held to benefit the Severna Park High School athletics programs. Tickets are $40 apiece. Veterans and SPHS grads will receive a special gift upon entry. Ride the mechanical bull, sample some great food and have a few drinks. If you feel like it, the organizers encourage everyone to dress up in their best western gear.
If this event whets your appetite or you’re just in the mood for a Bull and Oyster Roast but can’t make Friday’s there’s one on Saturday as well. The Bowie Elks lodge will host theirs from 6 to 11 p.m. with food service continuing until 8 p.m. Entry fees have two levels: $40 covers the full menu plus drinks while for $20 you can get everything but the Oysters.
On the other side of the bridge this weekend Easton is holding the 41st annual Waterfowl Festival. The entire town participates in this event one way or another, and it’s an important exhibition of Eastern Shore maritime history and tradition. Paintings, stamps, photography, books, carvings, sculptures and more will be on display. Demonstrations of retrievers, fly fishing and dog shows will take place. There is a lot more going on all over Easton, and especially if you haven’t been, and is definitely worth a look.
It’s a nice fall weekend with plenty of going on near or just outside of Annapolis. Maryland Avenue will be singing and playing and across the bridge will be cultural heritage, history and the opportunity to help support a town and its people. Outdoor events are getting scarcer so take the chances as they arise.
NEXT WEEK: Some residual hauntings infest the Annapolis Streets and the Holiday events ramp up.
