This past Sunday was May Day in Annapolis. This 55-year-old tradition is sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis.

May Day and First Sunday Arts Festival landed on the same day this year, making both events event more extravagant. With two great reasons to head downtown over the weekend, Annapolis was filled with arts, entertainment, and visitors.

What exactly is May Day? May Day is an Annapolitan celebration of spring! The trees are green, the flowers are blooming, the temperatures are warming, and Annapolis is a place of beauty. Businesses and residences on spectacular Main Street, the city’s historic district, Murray Hill, and City Dock decorate their front stoops, doors, gates, and entrances with enticing floral baskets. These baskets are then referred to as May baskets.

Those who make these baskets and decorate their entry ways with them are extremely creative. You’ll never see the same basket twice. Every basket is beautiful and one-of-a-kind. The flowers that adorned the historic downtown area of Annapolis make for a spectacular display while strolling the streets of our town.

The May baskets were judged by the Annapolis Business Association and the Garden Club of Annapolis. A “People’s Choice Award” was selected for the best business display. Here are a few of our favorite May baskets this year:
