For some, the end of summer means the end of the need to impress in a bathing suit. For others, the end of summer does not signal the end of fitness but does just the opposite. Outdoor activities and race season seem to pick up around this time of year, and Annapolis is getting in on the action. To kick the fall race season off, Annapolis has three big races and fun runs that also do some good scheduled on the last Sunday in September. See the details below and choose to be part of the fall fitness group.
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s (NOCC) 4th Annual “Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer” 5k run and 3k walk is scheduled–like all the races here–for Sunday, September 29. The purpose of the run is two-fold: to promote health via fitness and to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. An inevitable outcome is that participants will learn about the disease affecting women and in turn, create a community of support for survivors and those suffering the symptoms. Women, men, and children are encouraged to participate. In participating, you can play a role in helping NOCC reach its goal of raising $200,000. As of tonight, NOCC has raised over $85,000. This is less than half the goal but there are still 17 days to get your donation in.
Other important things to know for this race include the time, location, and features. The $25 fee gets you a spot at the start line at 7 a.m. that morning. Lucky for you, the race is from the Westfield Annapolis Mall. On race day, there will be a cancer survivor tent, spirit tent, awards for winners at various age groups, live entertainment, raffles, and refreshments. For more information or to sign up, click the NOCC link.
Thirty minutes after the NOCC event, Annapolis Run for the Light House kicks off. Like the run/walk above, this one also raises awareness and funds for a good cause. Light House Shelter is a homeless prevention center that offers support and basic needs for the homeless. The half marathon will provide community-wide support for the less fortunate. In conjunction with the half marathon, the 5k Joe Shafran Memorial Run also takes place that morning. Both runs begin from the Sassafras Pavilion at Quiet Waters Park, though the 5k starts 15 minutes after the half marathon.
To participate in the half marathon, runners must pay $85; registration cost for the 5k is $45. Prospective runners must register online before race day. Aside from raising awareness and funds, participating gets you a tee shirt, refreshments before and after the race, and a timing chip. To register and find out more about the Light House Shelter, head to their site..
Finally, the afternoon presents the chance to join the “Healing in Heels” Dash for Breast Cancer. This fun run functions similar to the first race discussed here–raise money for cancer research and prevention and more specifically, for Anne Arundel Medical Center and Save the Coconuts. The event, organized by Charm City Run, kicks off at noon and should conclude around 5 p.m. Appropriately, the race departs from Charm City Run Annapolis in the Annapolis Towne Centre and is a mad dash (literally) through ATC. The event is not timed but heels and pink apparel are strongly encouraged. Dressing in tutus, wearing hot pink tube socks, and even pink boas are totally acceptable. After the quite fashionable dash, a celebration ensues complete with food, alcoholic drinks, live entertainment, and a costume contest. The price is $20 if you register pre-race or $25 at the door. To learn more, visit Charm City Run’s site.
Start your fall season with a pep in your step. Run, walk, and dash in heels for the good of others.
