In a town better known for seafood, Annapolis boasts some mighty tasty burgers. With all due respect to haute cuisine, locally grown products, wraps, fusion, small plates, and other hot dining trends, sometimes only a burger will satisfy your hunger. Here are five of our favorites. We welcome your feedback. So let us know how you liked these and send word of your favorites.
Davis Pub
400 Chester Ave. (at Fourth St.)
410-268-7432
At Eastport’s answer to Cheers (doing business since the 1930s), the burgers are consistently good: juicy, flavorful and filling. I can’t count how many 7 oz. Black Angus burgers ($7.95 ) I’ve had at Davis over the years. But who’s counting? They come in a basket with lettuce, tomato, a pickle and side dish. The onion rings star. Weather permitting, dine at a sidewalk picnic table—with a sliver-of-Spa Creek view. Note: Show up by 6pm for din on Friday and Saturday or expect a wait.
Five Guys
509 S. Cherry Ave. (at Forest Drive) in Village Greens
410-216-7971
I have their phone number programmed into my cell phone. And they recognize my voice! How’s that for an endorsement? The beef is fresh-formed when you order, never pre-frozen. Burgers come in 2 sizes: Little ($3.49) and Regular ($4.76)—and that includes any or all of 16 toppings. A self-proclaimed French fry maven, I tell you: These are the best anywhere. Try them doused with malt vinegar. Last week we had a feeding frenzy for four (2 adults, 2 kids) for under $35.
Main Ingredient
914 Bay Ridge Rd.
410-626-0388
Voted the best caterer in Naptown for 5 years running, the Main Ingredient serves the same award-winning cuisine in its café. Not in the mood for a “grown-up†meal? Receive the same attentive service and attention to detail for which the Main Ingredient is known with a satisfying half-pound Angus beef burger ($10). Do try the sweet potato fries ($4)—out of this world, and enough for two to share. Herbivores take note: There’s a veggie burger for $9.
Sam’s on the Waterfront
2020 Chesapeake Harbor Dr. East
410-263-3600
Feast on the spectacular view of the Chesapeake Harbor marina and mega-yachts with your Kobe burger and draft or special martini (I like mine dirty). Locals gather on Tuesdays for the half-price 8-ounce grilled Kobe burgers ($7). Now that you know about this bargain delight, consider yourself a local too. If you can’t make it on a Tuesday, the Kobe burger is $13.95 Wednesday through Monday. There’s seating on the deck in nice weather and music some evenings.
The Severn Inn
1993 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.
410-349-4000
Besides enjoying a reputation for excellent cuisine in what many consider the primo Annapolis setting—on the Severn River with an unobstructed wide-angle view of the Naval Academy—The Severn Inn serves up a tasty 8 oz. Angus burger with white cheddar, apple wood-smoked bacon and garnish of crispy onion straws on a toasted Kaiser roll ($13) at lunch and in the pub (anytime). Also on the lunch menu is a bison burger with gruyere, caramelized onions, wild mushrooms ($14).
