Surrounded by water, Annapolis sees its fair share of boats. Big, beautiful yachts dock at City Dock; charter companies like Watermark Tours and Schooner Woodwind feature tours around the area waters, big and small; visitors and those out for strolls around the city and even in Eastport can enjoy the sight of yachts, schooners, and all sorts of boats traveling leisurely. In addition, perhaps one of the most exciting, largest boating events–Sailboat and Powerboat Shows–comes in October to City Dock. With boating as such an integral focus, shouldn’t there be some way to implement better, greener practices to protect the waters and guarantee continued boating in Annapolis?

The hope for improved practices and a greener tomorrow is precisely what prompted “Red Light Recycle,” a project instituted by Annapolis Green. We’ve covered a few Annapolis Green events and even talked to the founders before, but this time, you have the chance to make a difference. It’s effortless and obviously, beneficial.

Red Light Recycle functions under several important goals; namely, to offer easy recycling. With containers specifically meant for trash and others meant for recyclable materials, Red Light Recycle means that boat show attendees (at the Sailboat and Powerboat Shows this October) can practice better recycling. It may seem like a no-brainer to always recycle, especially since it’s so easy. However, for organizations like Annapolis Green, the more that’s recycled, the better for the Earth. You can thank them by voting.

From now until tomorrow, March 6, you can cast your vote to support Annapolis Green’s goal to be awarded $10,000 from BoatUS Foundation’s Grassroots Grant competition. The local, friendly awareness group will use the money from the grant for Red Light Recycle. Additionally, this money allows Annapolis Green to spread clean boating awareness, create “Green Boating Event Toolkits” that will enlighten other organizations/event planners to practice green fun around the area’s waters. Lastly, the grant money will help Annapolis Green create a website with tips for boaters who want to practice clean boating.

It’s just as easy to vote as it is to recycle. Head to http://www.boatus.com/foundation.grants/vote.asp to scan the QR code here to cast your vote. You can vote both today and tomorrow.
