Yesterday’s track change for Hurricane Florence, currently moving toward the Carolinas as a Category 2 hurricane, appears to be favorable for Anne Arundel County as the storm tracks further south. Residents of the county should still remain vigilant, as this is still a large and powerful storm. The National Weather Service predicts a total of approximately one inch of rain by Sunday, very little wind and moderate tidal surge.
The Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor as everything is subject to change if the track shifts. They encourage families to continue to prepare for potential flooding and to remember the dangers of flood waters.
While Maryland is not expected to see the worst of the storm, the City of Annapolis distributed sand bags to individuals and businesses on Sept. 12 as a safety precaution.
If a flood warning goes into effect, it is essential to follow your emergency plan and not react impulsively. Remain in an elevated, dry, safe place for the entirety of the flood. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood water. Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
Remember to stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
