You know that feeling you get when you meet someone who is really passionate about their work?  Well, that is how I felt after chatting with Sara Bendrick, host of DIY’s I Hate My Yard. Sara is all about landscape design and construction. It is obvious from watching her TV show, which takes out of control yards and turns them into outdoor retreats, that she is a transformational landscape designer. Once I talked with her, I knew that this no nonsense lady could get the hard work done.

As we head into spring in the Mid-Atlantic, I asked Sara what one piece of advice she could give us locals to improve our yards. She said, if nothing else, have a plan in mind of what you want the space to be. If you lay out what you want and organize your thoughts, even foresee the future a little, then you have a starting place to work from. Everything else will follow. For the softscaping (the plants and grasses) relying on the local neighborhood garden nursery to provide personal understanding of native plants and climate.

Sara thinks that a yard should standout (think bold color accents in interesting places) and brings her well trained eye to her TV show and her private clients in San Diego, CA. I am looking forward to hearing more yard tips from this fun and inspiring landscape guru. She will be speaking at the Annapolis Home and Garden Expo, on Saturday Febraury 27 at 1:30 PM and Sunday Febraury 28 at 2:00 PM.  See you there.
