There is no denying the scenic and historic beauty of Downtown Annapolis, but each year on May 1, the annual May Day Basket Competition adds another dynamic to the city’s picturesque setting as hundreds of businesses and residents decorate their doorways with displays featuring thousands of fresh cut flowers.
Now in its 59th year, the May Day Basket Competition is sponsored by the Garden Club of Olde Annapolis- Towne and is open to all residents and businesses located in the Historic District and parts of Murray Hill. The only rule is baskets must contain fresh flowers used as creatively as possible. In order to be qualify for the judging- and prizes- baskets must be in place by 10am on May 1 and must include a card indicating the participants name and contact information. The May Day competition also features children’s divisions, so you’re kids are encouraged to decorate their own baskets as well. All adult winners will be invited to a special May Day Tea gathering hosted by the Garden Club on May 5.
If you’re not competing in the competition, or even if you are, make sure to stroll the streets with your camera in hand so you can preserve the beautiful memory of May Day for years to come.
