Annapolis, MD (5-8-18) – Today, Mayor Gavin Buckley and the City of Annapolis announced the inaugural Annapolis Sailor’s Triathlon will take place on Saturday, July 28. The event, which will be coordinated in partnership with the United States Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association, begins at City Dock’s Susan Campbell Park and traveling along city streets, through the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Station Annapolis, and the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
“The Annapolis Sailor’s Tri will raise heartbeats in more ways than one as triathletes traverse our beautiful city and county,” said Mayor Buckley. “Swimming Spa Creek, biking through our historic streets, across the Naval Academy bridge to the scenic vista of Greenbury Point that overlooks the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay, and finally running through back through the streets of Annapolis and thru the academy – for the first time since 9/11 – will make for a historic sporting event. This event will become a signature event for the city, but also demonstrate that elected leaders, no matter the party or level of government, can work together to achieve goals.”
The Mayor announced that the first team to register for the event is a relay team consisting of himself (a 3.8-mile run), Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford (a 12-mile bicycling course) and County Executive Steve Schuh (a 500-meter swim). Co-Event Director Craig Harrison presented an event overview of the United States of America Triathlon officially sanctioned sporting event.
“I look forward to teaming up with County Executive Schuh and Mayor Buckley to participate in this triathlon,” Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford said. “This is a true bipartisan partnership – and with proceeds going to the Annapolis Department of Recreation & Parks and the American Cancer Society, we’ll be having a great time while benefiting a great cause.”
“This triathlon is another demonstration of the great partnership between the City, County, and now State, as we work to bring attention the beauty of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, and the State of Maryland,” said County Executive Steve Schuh.
The event’s field is limited to 500 individuals or team registrations and the registration fee is $150 for individuals and $200 for a team. Information about the Annapolis Sailor’s Triathlon can be found at www.sailorstriathlon.comor by emailing sailorstriathlon@gmail.com.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Annapolis Department of Recreation & Parks and the American Cancer Society.
