Annapolis, MD – Superstar violinist Midori joins the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for the first concerts of the 2016-2017 season, September 30 and October 1. Entitled “Lovers and Dreamers,” Music Director José-Luis Novo will lead the orchestra’s first performance of the season at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.
The Symphony’s opening weekend Masterworks concerts will begin at 8:00PM and be preceded at 5:30PM each evening by a gala celebration. The Symphony’s third annual Opening Night Celebration consists of a pre-concert cocktail party and post-concert dessert reception in the beautifully decorated Maryland Hall “ballroom.”
Annapolis Symphony’s Opening Night concert program includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin featuring Midori, Hector Berlioz’s Love Scene from Romeo and Juliet, and Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János Suite.
Midori was born in Osaka, Japan in 1971 and began studying the violin with her mother, Setsu Gotō, at a very early age. Zubin Mehta first heard Midori play in 1982, and it was he who invited her to make her now legendary debut – at the age of 11 – at the New York Philharmonic’s traditional New Year’s Eve concert, on which occasion she received a standing ovation and the impetus to begin a major career. Today Midori is recognized as an extraordinary performer, a devoted and gifted educator, and an innovative community engagement activist.
Tickets for the concert, “Prelude” pre-concert party, and “Encore” post-concert party are sold separately and are currently on sale online at www.annapolissymphony.org, by calling 410-263-0907, or in person at the Symphony’s office at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase Street Suite 204, Annapolis, MD 21401.
