A chemical spill was responsible for closing Route 50 in both directions from Annapolis to Davidsonville Sunday night while Anne Arundel County’s hazardous material crew cleared the roadway.

The driver of a DuPont tanker truck called 911 as soon as he saw a large vapor cloud coming from his vehicle. After firefighters and paramedics arrived, the truck driver was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore for treatment of respiratory problems from inhaling the fumes.

Route 50 from Route 450 to Route 424 was immediately closed and traffic rerouted. The scene was cleared by 9:30 p.m.
