Annapolis officials are considering installing speed cameras near local schools. There is also discussion about installing speed cameras in road construction zones.

Speed cameras, like those shown, may be used in Annapolis.

Mathew Silverman, an county police officer and city Alderman says that bringing cameras to Annapolis would not cost the city any money if the right contractor is selected. Several contractors will need to be contacted for pricing quotes before any further decisions are made. The cameras would most likely be on easily transportable tripods.

More than 5,300 tickets could be issued to motorists who travel along Forest Drive weekly. These citations could generate several million dollars for the city yearly. If you’re exceeding the posted speed limit by 12 mph or more, the camera will take a picture of your car’s tags and a ticket will be issued. The current law regarding speed cameras is limited to only school and construction zones.

Mayor Josh Cohen said he is still undecided about the camera issue. Michael Pristoop, Police Chief, will talk about the subject with the city council’s Public Safety Committee this week.
