St. John’s King William Players Wonder “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

The King William Players will perform Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at 7 p.m. Friday, December 10; at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 11; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 12. The performances will be held in the  Francis Scott Key Auditorium and are . No tickets or reservations are required.

The play focuses on the tumultuous relationship between George, a middle-aged history professor, and his wife Martha, the daughter of the college president. The couple invites a younger biology professor and his wife over for a night cap, which takes an aggressive turn and becomes a haunting exploration into the tribulations that come with excessive intimacy.

St. John’s junior Jesse Wang, the play’s director, describes “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” as “a window into a vicious night, with two couples who battle with their ideas of intellectualism, survival of the fittest and, most importantly, the danger of intimacy.” Wang adds, “I chose to direct this play to show something about how we interact with one another and maybe something about what happens when you become close to someone—too close in the case of two of the characters in the play.  It really made me think a lot about my own life, and whenever something can do that—a play or a movie or a book—I know it’s worth exploring.”
