In the mood to take a drive to the driving range? Would you rather play a round of putt-putt than putter around the house? Annapolitans need only turn to the nearby Severna Park Golf Center for a variety of outdoor amusements for all ages.
The Severna Park Golf Center offers several activities to choose from including an 18-hole miniature golf course, a par 3 course, a driving range with around 43 hitting bays, and an unenclosed batting park. This family-fun center located off Ritchie Highway in Arnold, MD has been under current management since 2004.
Navigating the Times
The Severna Park Golf Center paused operations from March through May in accordance with state guidelines from Governor Larry Hogan. Once outdoor amusements were permitted to resume, it was back to business for the Severna Park Golf Center.
“Our business has been fantastic ever since we reopened,” said owner Rob Brilliant. “We have a lot of support from the community and folks are loving being outside. As long as they maintain social distances and wear face masks in the golf shop, they are permitted to play and not necessarily wear masks while they are outside. That is a personal preference.”
Other procedures have been instituted for the safety of all patrons at the golf center. These include the sanitization of rental equipment such as clubs for the miniature golf course and driving range between uses.
Improvements and Renovations
Upgrades at the Severna Park Golf Center were underway prior to the pandemic and further developments are in progress. The center has already undergone a noteworthy renovation project including an improvement of the greens on the par 3 course and of the course itself. Beneficial technology for golfers in the hitting bays is on the way and installation will hopefully be completed by late fall. A beer and wine license is also in the works.
The evolution of the pro shop has been spearheaded by Shay Smart, a PGA Professional and General Manager of the Severna Park Golf Center as of July. Under Smart’s direction, the Severna Park Golf Center is now a certified PING and TaylorMade golf fitter and also sells custom golf clubs out of the shop.
Creating an Experience
Looking forward, the Severna Park Golf Center is reimagining visits to their site with a focus on creating a custom experience. “The image we’re trying to portray is like getting a custom suit,” explained Smart. “We’re trying to meet everyone’s needs in a custom way. Whether it’s getting a set of the right equipment for your game, the right teachers for your game, or the right playing course for your game.”
Smart also hopes to characterize the Severna Park Golf Center as a learning center where families can enjoy quality time together. With this goal in mind, new programs are launching this fall including parent-child golf days.
