Despite our best efforts to both rally our own Annapolis troops (excepting of course, the Navy who showed dignity and pride in defeating Army in their heat) and to dishearten the oft-rebellious legions of the Maritime Republic of Eastport, the Slaughter Across the Water has ended in a tie.
But, if the war is only a conceptual one, and the battles waged only on the field of morale then it is Eastport who should be grinning mostly broadly. The battles may be over but Eastport won the war.
The upstarts had larger numbers, larger participation and larger turnout over the daunted but not defeated Annapolis loyalists. We were good enough to kiss our sister, but we were battling not to win — but to not lose.
Eastport also took home the story of the day. Apparently, two firefighters who had begun dating after the crushing defeat Annapolis had dealt to them last year got engaged at the event this year. On the strength of this, the Fire Department was able to defeat their first-responder cousins the Annapolis Police Department in their kick-off tug of war. Worse, this was the third consecutive time the Eastport-backed Fire Department beat the Annapolis boys in blue.
Actually, the Eastport side is always more festive – owing partially to the fact they got their liquor license years before one was obtained on our side. In years past Eastport had actually run ferries to help even out the odds. The hope, by not running the ferries was to increase participation on the Annapolis side. We threw our backs out pushing this cause on our own end here at Aanapolis.com but in the end, our own troops deserted us.
The hope is to get a genuine, but good natured rivalry brewing since all proceeds go to benefit local nonprofits anyway it’s wins all around for everyone. Well, that didn’t happen this year, unfortunately but luckily for us the rowdy Maritime Republic of Eastport will probably rise again.
As for actual results, we’ll just call it even.
