While we like to keep you up-to-date on all the fun activities and events that happen in Annapolis, the biggest story of this week and the one everyone has their eyes on is Hurricane Florence. The tropical storm is quickly gaining strength as it makes its way toward the U.S.’ East Coast, and the governors of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have already declared a state of emergency.
Florence is the first Atlantic storm of the 2018 season to reach Category 3 status. You can track the storm here.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has advised Maryland residents to be prepared for the storm and to take proper safety precaution as the hurricane moves closer. He will be discussing such safety measures at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
“We continue to monitor Hurricane Florence as it moves toward the coast,” Governor Hogan wrote on Facebook. “Please, take this time to prepare yourself, your family, and your home.”
Meteorologists are still uncertain as to what impact the hurricane will have on Maryland, but have been updating their forecasts as Florence continues to move over the Atlantic toward the southeast coast. It is now moving at 130 mph, and mid-Atlantic states are expected to receive some storm surge and flooding (as Annapolis already has).
Have your hurricane plan in place! Prepare your evacuation plan, particularly if you live on the Eastern Shore, and be sure you’ll be able to get in touch with family members, update your emergency supply kit and stay on top of National Weather Service updates.
Hurricane aside, there’s a lot going on in Annapolis and around Anne Arundel County this weekend. Many of the events are outdoors, and so are obviously weather-dependent. More events, including those that are recurring, can be found here.
