Commissioning Week at the United States Naval Academy is right around the corner, and soon Annapolis will be filling up with families from across the nation ready to celebrate the accomplishments of their sons and daughters. If you’re hanging around waiting for the tradition, here are some ideas to keep you busy:

schooner– Saturday, May 9, is the 15th Annual Maritime Republic of Eastport’s .05k Bridge Run. Once called “the least challenging athletic event ever conceived” this much anticipated yearly event is all about the spirit of community and raising money for good causes. Registration starts at 10:30am at Fleet of Feet on 6th St. The race begins promptly at noon and lasts until the last participant has crossed. An awards ceremony and trophy presentation will follow at 12:10 and proceeds will go to benefit local charities. For more information visit www.themre.org.

– This week, Annapolis Sailing Cruises has two unique sailing experiences lined up. First, celebrate mom with the Mother’s Day Brunch Sailing Cruise from 10am-1pm on Mother’s Day. This three-hour tour includes free Bloody Mary or Mimosa and delicious food: homemade scones, quiche lorraine squares, baked citrus salmon with hearty bread, grilled flank steak, fresh fruit salad, orange juice and homemade biscotti. Next up, cruise the Chesapeake Bay at sunset while enjoying delicious local beer from Port City Brewery in Alexandria. The Sunset Sails & Beer Tasting takes place aboard a 74-foot, classic wooden schooner from 6:30-8:30pm on Tuesday, May 12. Tickets are $44 and include samplings and discussion with a brewery representative. Blues traveler rams head on stage– Also on May 12, Grammy Award-winning, Billboard Top 10 recording act Blues Traveler is bringing its harmonica heavy tunes to Rams Head On Stage. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $75.  Visit www.ramsheadonstage.com to get tickets now.

-Finally, Thursday is the start of one of the year’s most special times in Annapolis, as USNA Commissioning Week 2015 kicks off with your chance to get a bird’s eye-view of the United States Naval Academy.
