It’s probably safe to assume that winter has fully arrived. However, with the many galleries in the area and interesting performances, there is no reason to catch a case of the winter blues. There is live music at 49 West Coffeehouse and Federal House Restaurant and galleries to attend all this week. Annapolis hotels even offer fun this week–Double Tree puts on a wedding expo on Sunday. Of course, if you do want to be adventurous, Annapolis has plenty of parks, trails and skating locations for your winter pleasure. If you are the adventurous one, look to aacounty.org/recparks for a complete list of outdoor places to peruse. Quiet Waters Park has ice skating–challenging yet fun!
Music and Performances
MHCA Showcase Artist Series presents Telling: Baltimore on January 21 at 7:30 p.m. As told by veterans and scripted by writers, this event is sure to open eyes as to what military life is like. The audience is treated to stories from a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” veteran, the mother of a fallen hero, and an active duty medic. The storytellers will not shy away from explicit details and mature language, so leave the kids with a babysitter. With the release of troops from the Middle East, this event could not come at more perfect time. Listen to what your countrymen and women endured while in duty, and learn what they still endure today. It’s the perfect chance to show your patriotism and interest in the people who fight for our nation. A little national pride never hurts. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on marylandhall.org.

There is always something new and interesting to find in Annapolis shopping, and art is no exception. McBride Gallery features “Winter’s Splendor,” from now until February 28 to celebrate the beauty of winter. The website shows oil paintings of serene and white landscapes, and everyday life enveloped in a blanket of white snow. There are twelve artists who show their creations during this exhibit–plenty of lovely pieces to peruse and maybe even purchase. Check out mcbridegallery.com for featured pieces and upcoming exhibits.
Federal House Restaurant offers a week of music too. On Wednesday, January 18, the restaurant features Dueling Pianos–a night of singing along to artists on pianos. (Don’t worry if you aren’t an Elton John or Beyonce, the restaurant serves alcohol for those who are piano-singing shy.) On the 19th, the Sly 45 Trio plays. On the 20, DJ Crazy Chris Hart mixes beats and gets the crowd ready for a fun weekend. The next day, the 21st, DJ Devin continues the festivities and fun. Go to federelhouserestaurant.com for a menu and schedule of other upcoming events.
